Plain systems from someone who has spent a career running building projects for the owner.
I've spent decades running building projects for the owner. Campus buildings, facilities work, renovations and new construction. The job has always been the same: keep the owner informed, keep decisions moving, and make sure nothing important falls through the gap between meetings.
The Owner's PM is where I share the systems that work from the owner's side. Not theory. The agenda, the logs, the weekly report and the habits behind them.
Why the owner's side
Most project management content is written for contractors or for IT. The owner's PM has a different job. You don't hold the subcontracts or run the crews. You hold the budget, the schedule promises and the decisions. When something slips, the question comes to you: who owns it, what happens next, and by when?
Answering that question quickly, every week, is most of the job. It is also very learnable.
What I believe
- Every open item has an owner, an action and a date.If it doesn't, it's a topic, not an action.
- The owner should never be surprised.Report what changed, what needs attention and what's next, every week.
- Good projects are a team effort.The design team, the contractor and the trades all want the same finish line. Clear systems make everyone's job easier.
- Simple beats clever.A log people update beats a dashboard nobody opens.
